“A significant budget surplus provides California with an opportunity to address on-going issues confronting the state. I am pleased to see the Governor’s continued effort to fight COVID-19. Additionally, I am glad to see he is taking seriously the sudden increase in retail theft, this needs to end now.
Over the past three years, I’ve fought for funding increases to address the impacts of climate change and am therefore grateful for the Governor’s commitment to wildfire fighting and prevention as well as drought relief. As a member of the Budget Committee I will continue to be a strong advocate for additional funding to address climate change throughout the state, with a focus on local projects that will help address sea level rise, an issue that directly impacts San Mateo County and the Bay Area.
I am also supportive of his proposals to address homelessness and mental health. We must take steps to address economic uncertainty and anxiety many Californians are experiencing and make certain that individual economic assistance and funding to support small businesses gets to those who need it most in a timely manner.
As the Chair of the Select Committee on Biotechnology, I am especially pleased that the Governor has responded to my advocacy and restored the research and development tax credit. This is crucial to my district, which is home to over 200 life sciences companies so California maintains its competitive advantage as ground zero for the Innovation Economy. As I enter my final budget cycle, I look forward to working with my legislative colleagues to yet again deliver another on-time balanced budget that invests in the people of California.”
