Assemblymember Kevin Mullin To Push for Mickelson Pool Reopening

Will be engaging with local health care leaders to urge reversal of decision

For immediate release:

San Mateo – Assemblymember Kevin Mullin today called upon Sutter Health to reopen Mickelson Pool in San Mateo, and will be seeking answers why Sutter is pursuing this action which is detrimental to the well-being of San Mateo County residents.

“Mickelson Pool has been a critical asset to Peninsula residents for over twenty years; with its warm waters providing relief for those with chronic pain and those who may be rehabbing from injuries or surgical procedures.  This pool has been also been a resource for children with special needs. My office has received numerous calls and emails and has already been in contact with Sutter Health regarding this unfortunate closure.

While COVID precautions were understandably the driving force behind the pool’s initial temporary closure, with solid vaccination rates in San Mateo County and protocols that can be replicated from other pools that have chosen to reopen, Sutter should follow suit with the Mickelson Pool. I will be reaching out to executives at Sutter Health and the Peninsula Health Care District, which too has resources at its disposal, to engage in immediate discussions on how Mickelson can reopen permanently to continue serving its purpose.

While I appreciate the potential funding issues, given the level of community support already on display, I’m confident with appropriate prioritization by the parties involved, that funding can be properly redirected. I will work constructively toward a solution with all those involved, including advocacy groups, to maintain a resource that serves my 22nd Assembly District constituents.”
