Statement

San Mateo – “Jackie Speier is an icon and a legendary figure in San Mateo County and California legislative and political history. From surviving the crucible of the Jonestown massacre to compiling a historic state legislative record which was compared to Babe Ruth’s batting record, to her fight as a Member of Congress for equality, justice and fairness for all and for holding those who abuse power accountable, Jackie leaves a public legacy of accomplishment that will stand the test of time. I will compare her to a more contemporary baseball legend, Buster Posey. Like Buster, Jackie is our hometown champion and has now stepped away from the field at the very top of her game.

I had the privilege of closely observing her in action as her Senate district director and Assembly district aide before that. I was awed by her ability to stand up to powerful interests regardless of potential political consequences. It was the embodiment of integrity, with a fidelity to the public interest above all other considerations.

Jackie- we all look forward with anticipation to the next chapter of your remarkable journey. You have inspired generations to service and we are forever grateful for your courage to lead and for setting the ultimate example for us all. You remain undaunted and unrivaled.”
