Speaker pro Tem Mullin’s Statement on the Murder of George Floyd

Sunday, May 31, 2020

The murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer is the most recent stark reminder of the inequality, racism, injustice and inherent bias that is very much alive in America. It also illustrates the need for continued reform of use of force tactics and overall systemic change in how police officers are trained and evaluated on an ongoing basis in this important area.

Clearly, as a white male I will never fully understand the fear that exists in black and brown communities who live these realities every day. As a father, I won’t have to worry about having a conversation with my sons about what they must do if ever pulled over by the police so they do not become what is now an ever growing statistic. That said, I must work harder to not only engage with empathy but I must also be an increasingly vocal part of the solution.

As a nation, we have overcome economic downturns, disasters and crises by coming together in common purpose. As Americans, we must ALL do better, myself included, and we must do the hard work of building a more just and equal society.
