Celebrating Women’s History Month

Event Date and Time

Women’s History Month celebrates the contributions women have made to our history, culture and society. Each year, the California State Legislature provides members the opportunity to recognize a Woman of the Year for their district. San Mateo County is fortunate to have many women who have made outstanding contributions to their local communities, the county and, in many cases, the region.

Join me for Conversations With Kevin as I welcome a panel comprised of the women I have had the honor to recognize as the AD 22 Woman of the Year throughout my legislative tenure, including my 2022 recipient Kitty Lopez, the Executive Director of First 5 Mateo County. During this virtual event, we will be discussing what motivates and empowers these women to make a difference, barriers and challenges they have encountered and overcome, and how others can become more involved and make a difference.

Tune in for our discussion on my website or via Facebook Live, and submit a question here.

The evening’s panel will be comprised of the following AD22 Woman of the Year honorees.

Child Care Challenges and their Impact on Families and Communities

Event Date and Time

Access to quality child care has been a persistent challenge in San Mateo County, a challenge made even more evident when COVID protocols and stay at home orders shut down facilities and parents were left scrambling to find alternatives. Lack of child care has an economic impact on families and a child’s early learning skills during an extremely critical time in their development.

I have taken child care issues seriously throughout my career, from my days working for the Child Care Coordinating Council (4C’s) to my position as a member of the State Assembly and a father.

Join me for Conversations with Kevin as I welcome a panel of child care experts to discuss the challenges San Mateo County is facing and the collaboration that is making a difference.

Joining me will be:

  • Kitty Lopez, Co-Chair Build Up San Mateo County (Executive Director, First 5 San Mateo County)
  • Christopher Maricle, Executive Director, Head Start California
  • Sarah Kinahan, Coordinator, Child Care Partnership Council
  • Michelle Blakely, Deputy Director, First 5 San Mateo County
  • David Fleishman, Executive Director, 4C’s Child Care Coordinating Council of San Mateo County

The California State Legislature is in recess until January 3, 2022 when we will reconvene for the completion of 2021-22 legislative session.  The 2021 portion of this session was very productive given our ability to make significant investments in California and its residents, including $7.6 billion for individuals and small businesses, and $6.6 billion to safely reopen schools.

Join me for Conversations With Kevin as I welcome my Assembly colleague, Marc Berman (AD 24) who is Chair of the Assembly Elections Committee. We will discuss this year’s legislative accomplishments and look ahead to 2022 and outline some of our legislative priorities.
